Website costs – explained!

A pie chart with various segment sizes and a number of £5 notes

How much does a website cost? How much should a website cost?

It can be frustrating when you ask what seems to be a very simple question – but the answer you get is vague at best. Like with any other service, it can depend hugely on who is supplying it. We can’t answer on behalf of website designers everywhere – but we can explain how we charge.

Please see below a rather excellent pie chart!

A pie chart with percentages for the costs of different elements of website design, building and hosting

This is a real and exact breakdown of costs from a recent website we built for a client, with all percentages rounded to the nearest percent. While the exact percentages might vary from job to job, you’d expect them to be similar to this one. The breakdown is as follows:

  • 49% – Designing and building of pages
  • 16% – Hosting
  • 5% – Domain purchase
  • 10% Resizing the website for mobile and tablet
  • 10% – Installing website security measures
  • 10% – Drafting legally required pages

As you can see, there’s more to building a website than just, well, building it! In particular, it’s important to note that the percentage for hosting and domain purchase are third-party costs that we arrange for you.

You can also compare it to renting a physical store:

  • Hosting = paying rent for a shop space
  • Domain = paying for the shop’s address

All of our work is quoted up front – so you’ll always know the cost for the entire project in advance of us beginning the work. There’s no hidden costs that we tack on later.

Additionally, other than third-party costs, everything we do is quoted based on the time it would take us to complete, based on a very competitive hourly rate. Our quotes have a full breakdown of costs so you can see exactly where we’ll be spending our time.
